Frequently asked questions

Plain answers to the questions that come up most often. General information, not personal advice.

Mutual funds

What is a mutual fund?
A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it in a portfolio of securities such as shares or bonds, managed by a professional fund manager. You own units of the fund in proportion to what you invest.
What is an SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan lets you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals — usually monthly — instead of a single lump sum. It builds the habit of regular investing and spreads your purchases across different market levels over time.
Are mutual fund returns fixed?
No. Mutual funds are subject to market risk. Their value moves with the markets they invest in, so returns vary and cannot be promised in advance. Past performance does not indicate future results.
What is the difference between equity and debt funds?
Equity funds invest mainly in company shares and tend to carry higher short-term ups and downs with the potential for higher long-term growth. Debt funds invest in bonds and similar instruments and are generally steadier, with more modest growth. Which suits you depends on your goal and time horizon.
What does the expense ratio mean?
The expense ratio is the annual cost of running the fund, shown as a percentage of the amount invested. It is deducted from the fund, so a lower expense ratio means more of the return stays with you.
What is KYC and why is it needed?
KYC — Know Your Customer — is a one-time identity verification required before you can invest. It uses standard documents such as PAN and proof of address, and helps keep the financial system secure.
Can I pause or stop an SIP?
Yes. An SIP is flexible: you can usually pause it for a period, change the amount, or stop it, without a penalty for stopping. The exact options depend on the fund and platform you use.
What is an ELSS fund?
An Equity Linked Savings Scheme is an equity mutual fund that also carries a tax benefit under the relevant section of the Income Tax Act, with a lock-in period. As an equity fund, it is still subject to market risk.

Health insurance

What is a health insurance premium?
The premium is the amount you pay — usually yearly — to keep a health insurance policy active. It depends on factors such as age, the sum insured you choose, and the type of cover.
What is a waiting period?
A waiting period is the time after buying a policy during which certain claims cannot yet be made. Different conditions can have different waiting periods, so it is worth reading them before you buy.
What is a pre-existing condition?
A pre-existing condition is an illness or condition you already have when the policy begins. Most policies cover these only after a defined waiting period, and honest disclosure at the time of buying is important for a claim to be honoured.
What is cashless hospitalisation?
Cashless hospitalisation lets you receive treatment at a network hospital without paying the covered amount upfront — the insurer settles it directly with the hospital, subject to the policy terms and approval. Non-network hospitals usually work on a reimbursement basis instead.
What is a top-up plan?
A top-up plan adds extra cover on top of a base health policy, taking effect once costs cross a set threshold. It can be a lower-cost way to raise your overall protection.
What does co-payment mean?
Co-payment is a share of a claim you agree to pay yourself, with the insurer paying the rest. A policy with co-payment often has a lower premium, so it is a trade-off worth understanding before you choose.
What is portability in health insurance?
Portability lets you move to another insurer while keeping the continuity benefits you have already earned, such as time served against waiting periods. It has to be requested within the timelines set by the regulator.
What does sum insured mean?
The sum insured is the maximum amount a policy will pay in a policy year. Choosing it well matters — too low may leave gaps, and the right level depends on your family and the cost of care where you live.
